Year-Round School: the modern school of today

As the traditional school system, having an 8-week summer, becomes less popular and more cities adopt the year-round school system, one question arises. Which school system is better? The old, 8-week summer system has been the same for ages while the new year-round system is more modern, and we possibly benefit from the change. I absolutely love my summer as much as the next student, but personally, I think the school year is too long and doesn’t have enough breaks. Which is what the year-round school system offers us.

With a year-round system, we would typically have periods of school followed by typically a 4-week break, but the best part is that the system would be flexible. For example, during the summer months perhaps we would have longer breaking periods while in the winter we would have longer schooling periods. Also, during the schooling periods in the system, we would have 8 periods in a day. We would have a couple electives during the day, but longer class periods. The longer class periods don’t sound very appealing, but once the period of school ends, so would the classes. If my class schedule could be cut in half, I know that’s about an extra 2 hours of sleep I’ll be getting at night.

After adding up all the benefits of having year-round school, I think we should start considering adopting this new system. It is used all around the world and even in many parts of this country. Having a year-round school would be extremely different, and it would take many students and teachers out of their comfort zones. At the same time, if we don’t give it a try, then we may never really know how this system might actually benefit us. So what do you think?

What are the pros and cons of having a year-round school system?

Would having a year-round school system be more or less beneficial to you as a student?

I personal would love school year round. Sure Summer is always good for changes in life growth, but I just had this conversation with my sister in law. I feel that by having  school year round we do not lose the mind set of learning. Plus schooling will go much faster.

I know people that have gone to a year round school and a school calender like ours, they say that they prefer the year round. They have long weekends all the time, and never have to go a whole month with out days off except for weekends. Although they can only go on summer trips in a limited time frame, they find a lot of ways to benefit from the other days they have off throughout the year.

We should switch systems because of all the benefits you just listed. Plus It wouldnt get us out of zone like the long summer break does to students. I believe that adopting this new modern day system would benefit everyone.

the year round school system sounds nice, but i think everyone is so used to the summer off system that it would be too big of a change. i think summer is the perfect time for a break because of weather and timing, so i think we should just keep it the way it is.

I would personally dislike it because the summer gives us the opportunity to recharge and have fun.

I would hate it. I like having 8 weeks off (even though I'm taking summer school) It gives you a breather and you don't have to worry about school work or anything.

I think that year-round school is a terrible idea. Having year round school would just give us a bunch more winter breaks and days off. I don't know about anyone else, but I forget everything having to do with school and homework over a two week winter break or even a one week spring break. Plus, with the nice weather in the Summer I'd never want to be stuck inside learning all day.

Although I do love summer I think that year round school would be a better system. I feel like I forget a lot over the three months we have for summer break and going year round would solve this problem. But like rachel said summer definetely gives me something to look forward to the whole year so it would be hard going to school day in and day out the whole year

I think having year round school would be great because instead of just one long break in the summer and a couple weeks off druing the year, we would have more and longer breaks throughout the year. But I do agree that it would feel like school never ends and you don't have a big enough break between grades.

I feel like if we had year round schooling It would feel like we were having constant school, even with little breaks. I like our current way of schooling because even though we have a lot of school and not many breaks during the year, we get to look forward to the long 3 month summer but for year-round schooling theres nothing really to look forward to.

9/11 Skylines and Turnstiles

I'm not usually someone who writes a lot , not publicly anyway but I do love to express my self through art, usually visual art but most of the time the art I make is influenced by something . In this case it's a song a written by one of my favorite musicians as a response to the feeling of horror and disbelief as he watched the Twin Towers in New York go from icons to ruins on 9/11/01. The song is sad,…See More
