It is finally that time of year again when the bell rings and the papers fly. But is the work really all done? Are we really free from all responsibilities? The past four years I’ve worked at my neighborhood pool as a lifeguard and it seem to be what everyone that lives around me does. It has come to my attention that a lot of my friends don’t have jobs. One might think that it’s because it is so hard to find a job these days, but actually the reason is their parents. They think that their kids are young and have their whole lives to work, so why not just enjoy it now? My parents have a different view, it teaches us responsibility and they won’t have to give me “handouts” when I need a new dress from forever twenty one.

From a teenager’s point of view, I know that dealing with work isn’t something you want to do all summer, but it does have its advantages. For one, I never have to ask my parents for money and I can buy whatever I need when I need it.  I actually feel like I have more freedom and control over my own life. With this new found freedom that I have acquired comes responsibility. I’ve had to learn how to handle my money as well as learning how to act in the work field. Having a summer job, I feel, has helped prepare me for my future. It doesn’t take up too much of my time , and my hours are pretty flexible so I don’t feel as though I’m missing out on the whole being young and living it up. What’s your opinion on this topic? Should teens have summer jobs or just hang back and relax for three months?

I think teens should definitely have summer jobs, but the problem is, so do most other teens. Finding a job in the summer has been nearly impossible for me. With all the college kids and high school kids looking at the same time, there's not really anywhere to go. I think it's very beneficial, but it's just not easy to find jobs.

I loved having jobs over the summer. I was a shampoo assistant at Salon Elite and Spa tuesday thursday and saturdays, I was a coach for PAFA Flags monday and wednesday and saturdays, and I was a nanny every sunday. But miraculously, I survived AND I was able to hang at the pool and with friends. It was great! :) GET A JOB PEOPLE!!!!!!!!!

My dad has the you dont need a job view. I think having a summer job is helpful money wise to the average teen, but it does mean having responsiblities and for some kids over the summer it is the last thing they want. I think teens should enjoy the time they got off from school.

although it is nice to just relax through the summer without any responsiblities, having a summer job is way more rewarding. it's not like your whole summer is going to be gone with a job, but yes some days you might not be abkle to get that perfect summer tan. on the bright side, you dont have to ask your parents for money, and you can even go buy that new bathing suit for the beach!

I have mixed opinions on this topic. On  one hand I think its a really good idea for kids to have summer jobs because of all the things it teaches them and the maturity it can give someone which is good for when you're older. But on the other hand, life is short and you're only a kid for so long, and summer is so short anyways, you should enjoy every moment of it!!! I dont know, its definitley a tough one, I know i feel the urge to get a job, but i probably wont get one this summer and end up getting one during the year.

Personally I just hang back and relax but thats only because of other commitments, but I think kids should have jobs to learn what its like to have a job because those tools will help later in life.

kids need summer jobs! or they need to be in an activity over the summer. not doing anything or having  no responsibility it really bad for kids. and whats bad having a summer job, nothing. you get paid and get to spend it on whatever you want.

thats exactly the type of thing i was getting at ben! this summer especially i feel like since we are getting older we are gonna want to have our own money for things like that

I totally agree with you. My parents have always made me pay for the things I wanted but they thought weren't necessary. The extra money is awesome, because I don't spend a lot of money anyway and having all that extra money saved up is a good feeling.  For example, a lot of my friends are talking about going to Lollapalooza this year, but are saying that they just don't have the money. It felt awesome that I could just tell my mom to take the money out of my bank account and not have to worry about it. So, yes I think kids should get summer jobs to get some money.

9/11 Skylines and Turnstiles

I'm not usually someone who writes a lot , not publicly anyway but I do love to express my self through art, usually visual art but most of the time the art I make is influenced by something . In this case it's a song a written by one of my favorite musicians as a response to the feeling of horror and disbelief as he watched the Twin Towers in New York go from icons to ruins on 9/11/01. The song is sad,…See More
