No Technology!?...How Depressing...

So, the other night I was taking history notes on the Great Depression, and having a wonderful time, I might add. In the notes, I noted (pun intended) that historians and economists seem to agree that one of the common factors that led to the depression was the availability of easy credit. Seeing as easy credit seems to be a big factor in our own economic disaster with all the foreclosures and credit card problems, I began thinking…What would be the first things we would have to give up if our economy collapsed? How far away are we?

Obviously, things would change. For example, since shopping would be curtailed, stores in the mall would close. Those people would lose their jobs, some would lose their homes, like the people that are currently in foreclosure. We understand that from history. But I guess the bigger question is…what would happen to our generation, where cell phones and internet are a way of life? During the Great Depression, people were just being introduced to technology, so staying home and listening to the radio, or playing board games wasn’t that big of a deal. But we were born into a technological world. Most of us have access to a car, or if we don’t our parents drop us off. We were raised to be involved. We have cell phones, video games, internet, and cable.

If we had to give up these things in order to put food on the table…what would happen? What things would be the first to go in your household? Would we be able to just return to a time where families played Monopoly on the weekends?

I don't think we could ever go back to the days where families sat around and played monopoly or just listened to a radio. Were too far in with technology, so unless this generation started raising their kids like that, I doubt we could go back. I honestly think the first thing to go in the house would be any land lines people have, becuase people hardly use them any more. Why use a house phone when you have a cell phone right?

I agree with Joey 100%! I might be able to survive a week and then I think it would only go downhill from there.

I can live without technology!! i get my entertainment from hanging out in the sun and reading books! Wait.... i wouldnt be able to read those hard cover books without efficient new technologies that make it possible to mass produce. I wouldnt have fresh food because the fridge would not be available. Technology has made a whole bunch of things in life easier and i like it.!! but, what if this was 1863 and we all had to farm the land and plan corn?? we would want to make life easier wouldnt we??? We developed tachnology for our own bettering. But what if technology takes over? what if we become fat vegetables like in the movie "WALL-E"!???

without technology we wouldn't be able to do write our ning blogs or do our ning contributions. I think that we would be able to live without it, but i think it would take time for us to adjust because we are so used to it, and it's part of everything we do!

I think we all could do it because we have done it before. I mean we grew up in the internet generation but I remember when there wasnt a reliable internet and I know i didn't have a cell phone till 7th grade so i think we could do it

i absolutely have no idea what i would do without technology, i mean think about it this is part of our homework and its even on the computer, its sad to see how much we revolve around something

I have no idea what would happen without todays technology but I know I wouldnt be able to live without it. I am always on my phone texting and listening to my iPod and on the internet looking up stuff and communicating with people. But at the same time i guess it wouldnt be to difficult playing board games at home.

We look at those things and take them for granted, if we had those taken away we'd feel uncomfortable but we'd live and manage. Communication is huge but there are ways around that doesn't have be necessarily a TV or phone or even internet.

I think a lot of people would feel lost without technology, it would definitely be hard, but I'm sure it's possible, like Matt said, people survived without it back in the day.

9/11 Skylines and Turnstiles

I'm not usually someone who writes a lot , not publicly anyway but I do love to express my self through art, usually visual art but most of the time the art I make is influenced by something . In this case it's a song a written by one of my favorite musicians as a response to the feeling of horror and disbelief as he watched the Twin Towers in New York go from icons to ruins on 9/11/01. The song is sad,…See More
