Lately whenever I turn on the news all I hear about is beatings and killings of kids at Chicago public schools. Violence is becoming a huge issue in our society today, and I think people need to become aware of this. Within the last five years there were over 500 shootings in the Chicago area. Just the other day on the news there was a 16 year old boy who was badly beaten with a bat on his way home from school. He got caught up between two gangs but he was just an innocent victim. Kids have just stopped going to school because they are scared that they will become victims in all of this violence. Imagine a learning environment where kids don’t feel safe at their own school, and every day is a struggle to stay away from the gang violence to stay alive. It must be very hard to learn in an environment like this. The question is, what can be done about this?

There are many organizations being formed to put a stop to violence in schools. There are rallies against gun violence and organizations like Mothers against Guns. City officials are and schools are desperately trying to put a stop to this violence by speaking out against it and protests. Police are even patrolling the areas around the schools when it gets out, but is this enough? With all the steps people are taking to stop the violence why do you think it is still a huge issue in our society? What else do you think should be done? Do you feel safe at school?

This really only applies to inner-city schools where gangs and gang-warfare exist. They should all have metal detectors when you come into the school to prevent possible assaults during school hours. As far as out here in the burbs, I think we'll be alright as long as none of these bad a** gangsters residing in this tough old Palatine hood start bringing guns to school.

I think to really understand what these people are going through on a daily basis, one would have to be placed into such an environment. It's hard to just imagine what it's like because we are so well protected at our school and homes. I mean theres very little chance for an intruder to get into our school, unless they were armed w/ a weapon, but even then we have plan's for when situations like those come up. Our school has us so well prepared, for any incident that we are unable to imagine such circumstances. It utterley dissapoints me, that anyone has to go through this everyday, wondering if they're gonna make it home safe or not. How is anyone supposed to focus on school, when your more concerned about your life!

It is hard to relate to what these students are going through. The area we live in has little to no saftey issues compared to so many others. The schools that do have these large issues of violence most likely can't stop this or get it under control because there needs to be help from the community, the government and there needs to be funding. It also seems like an issue that needs more attention to it. If more people were aware at how far it has gone maybe more people would help.

i dont really think the saftey issues at fremd even compare to the ones in chicago, so we have nothing to worry about in good ole palatine. but in chicago, im not too sure on what they could do to stop this. the organizations are a good start but a group of mothers against guns arent really going to stop a kid with a weapon. maybe they need stronger security?

Well at Fremd high school I feel safe. Not sure bout other schools.
Ha I know I'm going to be flamed to a crisped for saying this, but SHOULD YOU CHOOSE to use violence to solve your problems, and its not solving anything, then your not using enough of it. If a person with power can justify their purpose for doing something, then they will do it. Good or bad.

Violence is a big issue at many schools, but at Fremd i believe it is pretty safe. However, in Chicago I can't imagine how these kids would be able to go to school knowing that it might be them who get shot or killed today. I would'nt be able to comprehend a thing if I was too busy looking over my shoulder every second. There is a lot being done about violence, but as you can see it still is not enough. I don't have an idea of what else could be done, but I do know that it starts with the kids themselves. If anything should be done it should start by talking with them, the rival gang members and such.

I think our school is about as safe as it gets, but I cant imagine how the kids at such violent schools can actually learn. It seems like an awful way to go through school. I know that there is a lot being done right now to prevent gun violence but I still see it happening far too often, and I wish their was a quicker fix. I think whats true for all schoold with violence issues is that they need to break down the barries between the students, and get them to really understand each other.

The only time I feel unsafe at school is when you see Mr.Wencowski running through the halls after some one, but other than that Fremd high school is overall very safe because I don't really know anyone who who ridicule and make fun of some one to the point where they would want to actually physically kill alot of people.

I think that violence like this is unimaginable to have to live, and go to
school with. When I come to Fremd I have never thought about violence. Unless
there is a fight, and those aren't very often.

I feel horrible when I hear about school shootings. Its hard to understand that someone could take innocent kids lives because they are unhappy. I feel like there could be a shooting in any school regardless of the neighborhood you live in. Anyone could sneak a gun into school if they really wanted to. Our ids do ensure safety which is good. Overall I feel like I'm safe at Fremd.

9/11 Skylines and Turnstiles

I'm not usually someone who writes a lot , not publicly anyway but I do love to express my self through art, usually visual art but most of the time the art I make is influenced by something . In this case it's a song a written by one of my favorite musicians as a response to the feeling of horror and disbelief as he watched the Twin Towers in New York go from icons to ruins on 9/11/01. The song is sad,…See More
