Hey Facebook, why are we so obsessed with you?

When I arrive home from school, I always deal with the same problem. In my mind, I have this master plan to start my homework the minute I get home. That way, I can actually get to bed at a decent time on a school night (for once in my life). But then, I make the worst mistake I could possibly make. I say to myself "Oh, I'll just go check my Facebook for a few minutes. No big deal!" Worst. Idea. Ever. Before I know it, two and a haft hours have gone by and there I am... still creepin the book. It really doesn't seem like a big deal, but i'm sure most of you can relate. Now I wouldn't call myself addicted, I just think of it as a clever way of spending my precious homework and study time. So this little problem of mine got me thinking... why are people these days so obsessed with Facebook and other networking sites?

 

According to Facebook, there are more that 500 million active users as of 2010. 50% of those people log on at least one time during a given day. Also, people spend over 700 billion minutes per month on Facebook. Now thats a lot of people and a lot of time on just one website. Keep in mind, that Facebook has only been around since February of 2004. Since this popular social networking site is still relatively  new, maybe people are just interested and excited about this new technology. Having a website available to reconnect with people free of charge is definitely going to cause some hype. It is no doubt a genius idea, but I just wonder what people are actually using it for? Are they using it for business, pleasure, fun, or just plan creeping? It is just something to think about. Facebook has made a major impact on society around the world in such a short period of time. It is hard to say what the future holds for Facebook, because right now it seems to look like the sky is the limit.

 

As for all of you- What do you think of Facebook, and if you have one, why do you?. Mine is to spend pointless time looking at what other people are doing and tons of pictures from everyone and anyone. Not gonna lie. We all have our reasons, what's yours?

I don't understand it, but facebook is completely addicting. It's probably the biggest enemy of homework, Facebook is the worst percrastnation tool on the planet. Maybe it's the need for kids to feel like their up to date with all the current news, and not to miss out on anything?

I think people are so obsessed with facebook because we have a need for information. I would feel so disconnected from everyone if i didn't have one. At the same time, it is an addiction.

I recently got rid of my Facebook, my parents said that i was spending way to much time on it and since I had a Facebook, they saw that my grades were slipping a little. As much as I hate admitting it, Facebook was the problem. I was definatly addicted to Facebook. I spend anywhere from 3-4 hours everyday on it and didn't get homework done until 3am. But since I've deactivated it, I've been getting homework done on time, getting more sleep, and actually spending more time with the family and stuff. Amazing what a social network can do to you. Once in a while I'll reactivate it just to see any birthdays or anything like that, but I have to admit, I'm a little glad I don't use it that much anymore. But it was a great way to talk to my friends, get homework help, or look at some gossip that I may have not known about. I guess it has its pros and cons. If I ever reactivate it for good, I'm going to have to manage my time more wisely.

I got a Facebook because it was the new thing and no one went on Myspace anymore so it was hard to keep in touch with people. I mainly use my Facebook to keep in touch with family who I never get to see or to catch up with old friends. I also get it on my phone now and so do a lot of my friends. We will use it to talk instead of text because some of them don't have unlimited texting.

haha i got a facebook because the myspace days were over.. and FB was the new thing! haha. but i really like facebook because its comes in handy when u wana see old pictures or catch up with people u havent seen in ages. etc. i think its pretty useful

I got a facebook right about when I was going to leave jr. high for high school, so i could keep in touch with people. But over time, that reason has really faded, and I've grown to use it more for creepin on what my friends are up to, stay in touch w/ my sisters away at college and in general just see what people are doing. I think it's cool that theres a website that allows you to do so, but i agree that it's mega addicting!

At first I got a facebook because my friends were telling me too and I thought it was stupid.  But once I got it I went on it everyday and posted lots of statuses but then the "brand new" affect wore off and I got bored of it.  Now I only go on to see if I have any notifications and then I get off and I do that on my phone. I rarely use my computer to go on facebook anymore. If I want to message or chat with someone I'll text them.  What I don't get is why everyone add people they aren't friends with.  I think that if they aren't in your phone contacts then don't add them but then again all my friends have people in their phone contacts that they themselves don't even talk to.  So why must everyone be connected if they aren't friends and don't talk to one another?

carly mine is the same as yours. i love to see what other people are doing, look at their pictures and make a comment here or there. but another reason i love it, is it because me and my friends have an inbox that keeps us updated without making it public. we all get to see everything and it easier to keep us all updated.

I can see why people get so obsessed with Facebook. For me, I just like to have Facebook open even when I'm not even doing anything on it. Its weird. But I do like to keep in touch with my friends and see whats going on in their lives when I'm not there.

Being able to talk to people without them being there is an obsession with the human race. Think about it, we have cell phones, texting, myspace, twitter, and of course facebook. Which makes me believe facebook will never go away, and it will be one of the most popular websights year after year.
