No Technology!?...How Depressing...

So, the other night I was taking history notes on the Great Depression, and having a wonderful time, I might add. In the notes, I noted (pun intended) that historians and economists seem to agree that one of the common factors that led to the depression was the availability of easy credit. Seeing as easy credit seems to be a big factor in our own economic disaster with all the foreclosures and credit card problems, I began thinking…What would be the first things we would have to give up if our economy collapsed? How far away are we?

Obviously, things would change. For example, since shopping would be curtailed, stores in the mall would close. Those people would lose their jobs, some would lose their homes, like the people that are currently in foreclosure. We understand that from history. But I guess the bigger question is…what would happen to our generation, where cell phones and internet are a way of life? During the Great Depression, people were just being introduced to technology, so staying home and listening to the radio, or playing board games wasn’t that big of a deal. But we were born into a technological world. Most of us have access to a car, or if we don’t our parents drop us off. We were raised to be involved. We have cell phones, video games, internet, and cable.

If we had to give up these things in order to put food on the table…what would happen? What things would be the first to go in your household? Would we be able to just return to a time where families played Monopoly on the weekends?

I could give it up but I wouldn't like it. I love my pc and video games. I wouldn't be able to contact my friends all over the nation without skype. I wouldn't be able to listen to music or radio programs whenever I want. It would be a tough thing to do, but I think I could do it.

i think people would still spend hundreds of dollars to get the hottest phone or the best laptop no matter what the cost. my cousin a couple years ago was about $75,000 in college debt he had no money and was practically living in has car but he just HAD to have the hottest new phone. it's rather sad but, i dont think humanity could survive without modern technology.

Although I see your point, some people are happier without all the technology in the world. I am definitely not one of these people. I do see there point of view though, and there proof that you don't NEED all of the modern day technology to get along.

i know personally that if my family was cut off from technology we would all go crazy. we all have grown so used to technology that we wouldnt know how to function with out it.

I think that this is one of the sad things about today. We rely so much on our technology that if we ever lost it we would not be able to function. Its kind of sad and pathetic how much of influence technology plays on our life but what are we going to do? were addicted now.

If i had to choose anything to sacrifice, it would definitely be the television. Phones and computers are necessary to keep in touch with your friends and family, and who needs TV when you've got them? I would rather be playing some fun active game with people than sitting in front of a screen mesmorized and wasting precious hours of the day.

If this happened we would have to live like people did in the 20's which would be tough for all of us because it would be so different. Not having a cell phone or internet would suck.

I know most people would have a hard time, however, I do not think I would after getting use to it. I mean if we had to give up all technology to live, I would do anything to be fed and warm. It would be hard to ajust to, but it could happen.

We wouldn't make it... Our whole lives so far have depended on it and if we suddenly had to go without it, it wouldn't be good. I loved my iPod before it was stolen and used it everyday. It was hard to go on without it...

9/11 Skylines and Turnstiles

I'm not usually someone who writes a lot , not publicly anyway but I do love to express my self through art, usually visual art but most of the time the art I make is influenced by something . In this case it's a song a written by one of my favorite musicians as a response to the feeling of horror and disbelief as he watched the Twin Towers in New York go from icons to ruins on 9/11/01. The song is sad,…See More
