My Motivation

When I first started thinking about this blog, I had no idea what the topic of it was going to be on. I guess I figured I’d write about something I know well. Every time there’s a paper due or a project that has to be done I struggle to complete it on the last possible day. And every time I promise myself that the next time I’m going to get an early start, but it never happens. I think for some…

Tan or Orange?

Lately in the hallways all you see is girls that look like they just got back from Mexico. When actually they are just going to the tanning beds. You can't walk in the halls and not see someone that looks like they rubbed cheetos all over themselves. Girls at our school are self conscious about everything on their body: their hair, weight, height, and now their skin color. They look around and see other girls look tan and beautiful, so they feel to be like that they need to go tanning.…

Back Off and Let People live their lives.

Sorry this one is a wee bit late, but better late than never right?

Ok so I'm sure I'm not the only person who feels this way, but I personally feel that media is abusing freedom of the press. I'm mainly talking about most magazines dealing with pop culture or shows such as TMZ. These institutions, I feel are taking what Roosevelt called for, that being "muckrakers," and taking their "muckraking" a little too far. Muckrakers were…

Decisions, Decisions, Decisions

Now is the time in our lives when the pressure kicks in. Many of us want to go to college, but which one do we choose? What classes do we take in high school to help get into that school? Where are our friends going? How far away from home do we want to be? These are questions that are running in our minds over and over again as we finish up our junior year of high school. Pressure comes from parents, friends, teachers and ourselves. Friends might pressure us to go to a certain school with them… Continue

College picking time

All the juniors at Fremd high school keep hearing the word college. The word keeps being said more and more and that's how you know it is getting closer. Many people have started looking for ideas, and maybe some already know where they are going to apply. So you know you're going to go to college, but you have no idea where you want to go and don't even know how to start deciding what school is right for you. If this is your scenario you are reading…

False Accusations!

In modern day America, teenagers are portrayed to be many things, a lot of which are not true for everyone. For example teenagers in general are thought to put things off till the last minute and procrastinate even this may not always be the case. We are also made out to be very unreliable and have…

The Hemingways

I just read the Article of the Week for this week. Surviving as a Hemingway. It was about John Hemingway. Ernest Hemingway's grandson. He wrote a memoir about his family, particularly about his dad, that talks about their hardships. His dad dad had many problems with his life and John wanted to know why. And it took him awhile to do so. He traced it all the way back to Ernest. His dad Gregory/Gloria Hemingway (he had a sex change in 1995 and changed his name to Gloria) had somes… Continue

Memorable Moments in American Sports

There is something about American sports that we find interesting. Sports are a very common form of American Entertainment. There have been memorable moments in American sports history. These are not ranked in any order, they are just what I think are memorable moments in sports.…

Whatever goes up, eventually comes down

I was listening to a song by Chris Brown called Crawl. Chris Brown sings about how he was at a really low status and brought himself up, and how he regrets his mistakes. I started listening into the song and the lyrics, it made me think about Chris's career. Then I remembered one saying by Isaac Newton. What ever goes up must come down. Newton said this was a law for gravity, but I think it is a law for everything. When Chris started his music career, he became very popular,…

Entertainment Through The Years

Imagine a scene: cavemen drawing on a wall with rudimentary dyes, grunt and making other guttural noises to communicate. Now imagine the average teenager: typing and clicking away on Facebook and still grunting to communicate. While humankind has invented and discovered many things like the wheel, fire, electricity, the automobile, and the atomic bomb, they've also always had some sort of entertainment. Be it cave paintings, stories around a fire, games, music, or theatre, we never run out of… Continue

Would I be considered an Immigrant?

During the time of the immigrant unit and the family history project in AS I thought alot about what I am in the American system or culture.
What could a foreign exchange student that was born and raised on the other side of the Atlantic talk about that had to do with immigration?

My host mother suggested that I talked about what it is like being an immigrant and what the big differences are. And sure, there are big differences, although I have to think about…

Lady GaGa..Freak or Role model

THE FAME MONSTER

What do we think of Lady Gaga? Is she someone to look up to or just a freak that we all think is weird. Lady Gaga was raised in a normal Italian family in the lower side of New York. She began singing as a young child, and by age 19 she signed with Def Jam Records, but most people didn't recogize her until her first hit single came out "Just Dance" and that's when the Gaga craze hit. It seems that every award show that she's at afterward I always hear about her…

Paige's Page...(get it)

PRESSURE?

So in choir we are doing this big project on time periods like the classic era and the romantic era stuff like that. So one of the parts is looking up composers. As I was reading about all of these brilliant men ( sorry not many if any women composers back then ) did they ever feel pressure to be the best, to out do what people before them…

Freedom in the hands of the American people

http://www.NRA.com

Like a alot of people i had a difficult time coming up with a blog idea, and when i thought of one it was already taken. In History we've been talking about some of the amendments latley, for example the, 19th which gave women the right to vote. This made me think of the 2nd amendment which is the right to bear arms. I know this topic best so i decided to…

Keeping the Heritage Alive

All this talk about immigration and our family history projects really got me thinking. In America nationality is much more abundant than it is in other countries. If you think about it there are about 200 countries in the world, and most of those people's ethnicity is the country they live in, but in America we come from a broad variety of cultures. The thing is though when we all get mixed together there is a part of us that just automatically…

Is a "Ping" sound right for a baseball game?

Fresh cut grass, the singing of the national anthem, the pitcher throw the first pitch and you hear the sweet crack of the wood bat. That is america's past time but now of days when you go to a college baseball game they use aluminum bats. Does this really help them prepare for the pros? Also aluminum bats make the game a lot more dangerous. There was a New York city that wanted to ban aluminum bats because of childs death.…

Who lives in a pineapple under the sea...American Studies?

I guess you could say that in our generation, tv is a main factor in our lives. It's our main source of world news and its even a way to relax. A lot of people say that watching too much tv can "rot" a childs brain, but I have found that you can actually learn from some cartoons I have watched.

If you know me really well, you would know that I love Spongebob and I watch it pretty much every day. When was younger I didn't really notice it much, but now…

Outside the Classroom

A lot of work goes on in the classroom, but everyone has lives outside of the classroom and enjoy doing things that relate to American Studies somehow. For me, it's editing videos. I have been filming and editing videos for about 4 years. This relates to American Studies because it's what I'm doing my research paper on. I really want to pursue a career in editing films. It'd be really cool to be an editor for a really sweet movie;… Continue

9/11 Skylines and Turnstiles

I'm not usually someone who writes a lot , not publicly anyway but I do love to express my self through art, usually visual art but most of the time the art I make is influenced by something . In this case it's a song a written by one of my favorite musicians as a response to the feeling of horror and disbelief as he watched the Twin Towers in New York go from icons to ruins on 9/11/01. The song is sad,…See More
