Up Front Opinions: Which "Grit" is the Truest--1969 or 2010?
I first read the novel True Grit when I was about 11 years old. I first saw the original movie version at about the same time, and I’ve been a fan of both ever since. Charles Portis’s novel is an under-appreciated American classic, overwhelmed perhaps by John Wayne’s iconic portrayal of Rooster Cogburn in the 1969 film. Whenever I’ve been asked, “What’s your favorite movie?” my answer has… Continue

Television Advertising and Digital Media Advertising: Evolving into One?
The attention span of most people is not very long to begin with, but in this day and age where everything is instant and on demand, our attention spans are shortening even more. And with it, our ability to sit through and watch commercials on television is lessening too. Commercials are now going for an average maximum time of 30 seconds each, most trying to stay…

Moment of Silence
The moment of silence is known to me as paying respect to those who have passed and those who fight for our country. We started having a moment of silence last year for about half the year but then the courts ruled it as part of a prayer and as we know talking about or pushing religious beliefs in school is not allowed.
It is back and I think it shouldn't be. They say it focuses our minds for the day and that it is a good thing. and I agree to focus our minds but it shouldn't…

The Price of Education
The Price of Education
As we’re getting to the half way mark of our junior year, teachers, friends, parents, & family, keep talking about college. “Where do you want to go?” “What are you going to major in?” Whether we like it or not, the time to pick a school is coming up soon. The question on my parents mind, as well as mine is “How do you plan on paying for it?”…

Finals, What a Drag!
Now we all know its toward the end of the semester. You know what that means, yes finals. The time to stress to make sure you get the grade you deserved. To some these tests are very important. People study and study to make sure they can do well and do their best. To others they are just another test they aren't gonna study for. Some people need the the grade so they spend the whole weekend reviewing and…

Mind Over Age or Age Over Mind?
In today’s world age requirements and limits are becoming more difficult to set and follow. Of course we have the basics: Driving age=16, Age of consent (in Illinois) =17, Smoking age=18 and Drinking age=21. We have these because we believe when anyone has met the set age for each privilege they are capable of taking in the responsibility that is needed for it. But are these requirements correctly chosen for the future? As time goes on the mind set of children, teens, and adults are changing…

Money or Passion?
Junior year is the time in our high school career where we have to start getting serious about our future. With ACT's and college applications around the corner the life choice of our future occupations can no longer be delayed. But what exactly is the right choice? Money or Passion? In our world today money has become everything. Without money there is no chance in living a life wanted to be lived. Considering the sad fact that economic stability is very difficult to achieve the want for…

You could be watching TV and your mom tells you if you did your homework and you just reply "Yeah I did it already." A little girl could have seen something traumatic incident, and her mother comforts her by saying "Everything is going to be alright." Or the one that most of us grew up with "Of course Santa is going to bring you presents on Christmas!"
To say the least, everybody lies in many different ways, but why? The answer is just because we can because it is so easy to…

Well-being: The pyramid.
In today's society, not much of anybody is healthy, people always take a little too much of something; whether its food, sleep, drinking, drugs, or anything. This is not a good thing for us humans.
I don't think much of anyone knows exactly HOW to be healthy, and how to eat healthily. Let me ask you something, what's a macronutrient? Micronutrient? What do these serve? And what is the perfect carb/protein/fat/sodium balance for a young adult? My guess…

Textbooks- a thing of the past?
One of the biggest trends in technology is mobility. Combine that with the potential for saving money in the long run, providing students with up to date information at a faster rate and portability and you have a situation that makes mobile devices such as Kindles,…

helmet to helmet..should it result in fines?
Latley, the NFL has been strict about helmet to helmet contact and cheap hits. Not only can players be fined they could also get suspended, if not both. One player who has been fined multiple times for a lot of money is James Harrison. He is a linebacker for the Pittsburg Steelers. He was fined…

Pros and cons of having a job in high school.
Junior year in high school is probably the time when most students think about getting a job. We are all of legal age to work, and most of us are driving and need the money for gas or insurance, but is it really worth the stress and lack of free time?
Before I could get my license my parents told me I had to have a job first, in order to pay for my insurance, or else I couldnt drive their cars. That is the only thing that motivated me to get a job. I ended up getting hired at a movie…

Religion in Power: Good or Bad?
While learning history in American Studies, I can't help but notice that a majority of events are initiated as a result of religious reasons of one kind or another. While some of these events are positive, many others are not good at all. Possibly because of my non-churchgoing upbringing, a lot of the time I think that religion is a bit unnecessary for anything other than deciding how you personally live your life.
To clarify, I do not hate the people who are piously dedicated to…

The Two Faced Friend, we all know or have one
Everyone has their certain group of friends they fit in the best with, and everyone in that group always respects one another right? Not always. There will always be the occasional joking around with friends and poking fun at them for a little while, but the ones who are nice to you one minute, and then they are completely different the next. Say it's just you and your friend hanging out and having a good time. No arguements, no jawing at one another, just two buds having fun. That's way…

Legalize It
After nearly 75 years of marijuana prohibition, it has never before made more sense to legalize this ancient, harmless herb. Congress needs to review the law and see the plant for what it is: a plant. There are so many nation-wide advantages from legalizing it, that it seems stupid for the greatest country on Earth to make it a highly-illegal substance. It's seemingly limitless uses continue to be discovered, and we learn more about it each day. Something that can be used for everything…

When I arrive home from school, I always deal with the same problem. In my mind, I have this master plan to start my homework the minute I get home. That way, I can actually get to bed at a decent time on a school night (for once in my life). But then, I make the worst mistake I could possibly make. I say to…

Violence in media affecting kids???
Now more than ever, companies know exactly what sells to who. And violence among other thing's is definitely something kids will buy. But really, by doing this, they may be influencing an entire generation to think that violence and war is the norm in society, when really, it's the complete opposite.
Video Games, such as C.O.D.(Call of Duty), depicts such scenes in which you go around in different areas, competing against your friends shooting at and…
